Questions

Write the Total and Net Ionic Equation for the following; make sure to include state symbols.

  • A solution of bromic acid plus a solution of sodium nitrate
  • A solution of calcium nitrate plus a solution of potassium chloride

Answers

1.

Balanced equation

HBr + NaNO3 –> NaBr + HNO3

Total Ionic equation

H+(aq) + Br(aq) + Na+(aq) + NO3(aq) –> Na+(aq) + Br(aq) + H+(aq) + NO3(aq)

Net ionic equation

None. All species are spectator ions because all bromides are soluble (except silver) and HNO3 is a strong acid.

2.

Balanced equation

Ca(NO3)2 + 2 KCl –> CaCl2 + 2 KNO3

Total Ionic equation

Ca2+(aq) + 2NO3(aq) + 2K+(aq) + 2Cl(aq) –> Ca2+(aq) + 2Cl(aq) + 2K+(aq) + 2NO3(aq)

Net ionic equation

None. All species are spectator ions because all nitrates and all chlorides (except silver and lead) are soluble.
